I Killed the PayNow Chase in My Own Business. Here's How.

Customer says paid already, sends a screenshot, and now you're squinting at it trying to match the amount to the right order. I got tired of that, so I built the fix directly into Snapbook. No fees, no workaround, just a QR that already knows what it's collecting.

Every small business owner in Singapore knows this exact moment.

Customer PayNows you, sends a screenshot, and forgets to put the order number in the comment. Or they pay the wrong amount. Now you're in WhatsApp back and forth just trying to confirm who paid what, for an order that should have closed itself the moment the money moved.

I run a few businesses that all take PayNow, so this hit me from multiple directions at once. Instead of living with it, I built the fix into Snapbook, the back-office system I run my own ventures on.

Not a bank, but it behaves like one for this purpose.

Aspire is a fintech regulated by MAS under the Payment Services Act, currently running under a temporary exemption while its full payment institution license gets finalised. Day to day it works a lot like a digital bank, holding and moving money for the business, but technically it isn't one, so it doesn't carry the same deposit insurance a bank account has. Funds sit in segregated accounts with DBS, not directly with Aspire.

What made it worth building on: local transfers including PayNow are free, and setup is fast, versus traditional banks which take longer to onboard and charge more for the same basic transactions. As always, do your own diligence before deciding where to park business funds. This isn't a call to move your whole banking relationship there, just the account I use for this specific job.

The QR already knows the amount before your customer scans it.

When a customer checks out on a Snapshop store or books through Snapslot, the QR they get isn't a generic PayNow QR. The amount is locked in. The reference is filled in. All they do is open their banking app, scan, confirm. Nothing to type, nothing to get wrong.

Because it's tied to the Aspire account, the payment gets checked and matched automatically, usually inside a minute. No manual reconciliation on my end. It just shows up as paid.

Most tools that verify PayNow for you quietly charge for it.

Provider PayNow fee On a $100 sale
Snapbook + Aspire $0 You keep $100
HitPay 0.4% to 0.9% + small fixed fee You keep about $99
Stripe 3.4% + S$0.50 You keep about $96.10

Free QR generators exist too, but they don't verify anything, you're still matching payments by hand. The QR in Snapbook generates itself wherever it's needed, at checkout, at booking, on an invoice, so there's no manual QR creation and no room for a typo in the amount. Verifies automatically, charges nothing.

Not instant, but still automatic.

Invoicing runs differently since there's no single checkout moment to hook into. Outstanding invoices get checked against incoming payments a few times a day, so I'm still not manually matching bank statements against invoice numbers. Slower than the one-minute Snapshop and Snapslot flow, but still far better than doing it by hand.

Telegram tells you before you even check.

Telegram notifications ping the moment a payment on the fixed-amount QR comes in. The fallback covers the odd case where a customer pays through a normal, generic PayNow QR instead of the one Snapbook generated. That payment lands in the banking app as usual, and there's a mark-as-paid button right inside Telegram to update the order, no need to log in just to close it out.

If you want to set this up for your own business.

If you don't already have an Aspire account, you can sign up through my referral link. Full disclosure, it's a two-way referral, once you sign up and spend at least SGD $100 on your Aspire card for the business, you get SGD $250 credited to you as well, on top of whatever I get. Connecting Aspire to Snapbook is free either way.

Built it because I needed it, not to sell a feature.

I did not build this to check a box on a features page. I built it because I was the one squinting at screenshots trying to match amounts to orders. Zero fees, automatic matching, and it runs on infrastructure I already trust for my own businesses. If you are running a small operation on PayNow and still reconciling by hand, this is the gap worth closing first.

Questions about the Snapbook and Aspire setup.

Is Aspire a bank?

No. Aspire is a fintech regulated by MAS under the Payment Services Act, operating under a temporary exemption while its full payment institution license is finalised. It works like a digital bank day to day, but funds are held in segregated accounts with DBS, not insured the same way a bank deposit is.

Does this PayNow setup cost anything?

No merchant fee when it runs through Snapbook connected to an Aspire account. Compare that to Stripe at 3.4% plus 50 cents per transaction, or HitPay at 0.4% to 0.9% plus a small fixed fee. On a $100 sale you keep the full $100.

How fast does verification happen?

Usually within a minute for a Snapshop or Snapslot transaction, since the QR already has the amount and reference locked in. Invoices are checked a few times a day instead of instantly.

What if I do not want to wait for auto verification?

Telegram notifications ping the moment a payment lands, and there is a mark-as-paid button inside Telegram for the rare case someone pays through a generic PayNow QR instead.
